Like skin stem cells, hair bulge stem cells continue to self-renew, however as we age this process can become sluggish resulting in thin, brittle and fragile hair.

SALON SCIENCE® Swiss Apple has been designed to enter into the hair follicle through the scalp.

The formulations work as a wakeup call for follicles by targeting and rejuvenating the hair bulge stem cells, enabling them to keep working efficiently. This creates a delay in the hair ageing process, resulting in stronger, healthier and younger looking hair.

Swiss Apple: The renewal of hair stem cells obtained using PCTT* were treated with different concentrations of Malus Domestica stem cell extract and compared to a control culture.

Results: The Colony Forming Efficiency** (a characteristic) of stem cells was increased by 92% with a 0.04% of Malus Domestica stem cell extract.

This clearly shows that Malus Domestica stem cell extract helps hair stem cells to maintain their renewing characteristics or 'stemness'.

*Progenitor Cell Targeting Technology (PCTT): Culturing a hair sample in a medium specifically designed to mimic the stem cell's natural environment. This provides a cell culture model which specifically enables the evaluation of the effects of Malus Domestica Swiss Apple on stem cells.

Colony Forming Efficiency: Stem cells have the ability to produce colonies of new cells to replace cells that have stopped working or died. Their ability to do this is crucial to the renewal of cells and maintenance of youth, when cells are no longer active and being effectively renewed signs of ageing begin to occur.

Swiss Apple: Extending the life of hair follicles

Hair follicles in the anagen phase were isolated and maintained in a growth medium in which they continue to grow for about 14 days. They then gradually become senescent due to the lack of blood circulation reaching them, causing them to stop growing and start shrinking: this is the hair beginning to die.

Results: Some of these isolated hair follicles in the anagen phase were then incubated with 0.2% Malus Domestica stem cell extract and were found to continue to grow for 18 days. This clearly shows a delay of senescence caused by Malus Domestica stem cell extract.
